Editor's Advice: For those of you who need the power and utility of a full-size pickup truck, but are either worried about the environment or fuel costs, GMC presents an intriguing option. The 2005 GMC Sierra Hybrid, available as an Extended Cab with 2WD or 4WD, is able to provide 13-percent better fuel economy than the standard model, thanks to a small starter generator located between the engine and transmission. Not only does the generator assist in cranking up the motor, it is also provides assist to the power steering and brakes rather than leaving the job of running those accessories to the 295-horsepower, 5.3-liter V8 engine. Unlike conventional hybrids, the generator doesn't actually power the vehicle; rather, it generates electricity to supplement power from the gasoline engine. As in other hybrid vehicles, a regenerative braking system converts energy from stopping the Sierra into juice for the system. One unique benefit of the Sierra Hybrid is that dual electrical outlets in the cab allow you to operate any gadget for up to 32 consecutive hours.
